China is restricting the export of rare earths (especially for magnetic alloys). We are still in a good supply position
Since the beginning of April, the Chinese government has imposed export restrictions on some rare earths.
These measures include:
-
Export controls: Companies wishing to export rare earths will require an export licence.
-
Impact on magnetic alloys: The restrictions only apply to products containing dysprosium, terbium, samarium, gadolinium, lutetium, scandium or yttrium. Not all magnetic alloys are affected
-
Export licence: Exporters may need to provide information on the end use of the products in order to obtain an export licence.
UPDATE! Our current situation:
the effects of these restrictions have been spreading over the last few weeks. There are no problems with the production of the goods. It will be more difficult to get them out of the country. Although only selected alloys are subject to export authorisation, "all" magnetic alloys are currently being subjected to a large random sample by the customs authorities.
Due to the immense volume of goods and inspections, this also results in longer waiting times, which vary depending on the consignment and means of transport. In general, longer lead times must be expected.
The same applies to goods that require an export licence. This inspection procedure takes priority and is also associated with processing times.
Unfortunately, there is no fixed and calculable processing time for these two scenarios. The inspection by the customs authorities takes between 4-8 weeks, while the export licence procedure can take around 7 weeks. The overall processing times vary greatly and are not transparent, so we can only estimate our delivery dates.
We liaise closely with our suppliers. Together with our local consultants, we are endeavouring to cope well with this unusual situation and find solutions. We are receiving weekly deliveries from China and are still in a good supply position.
However, in order to ensure a targeted supply, we ask you to place your orders as early as possible.
We are confident that together we can minimise the effects of the export restrictions.
