Magnetic chain drive

With over 60 years’ expertise in magnetic technology, BRUGGER develops innovative specialised systems for demanding industrial applications.

BRUGGER stands for innovative magnetic solutions, developed and manufactured to the highest quality standards in the Black Forest. With the magnetic chain drive, we are presenting a novel specialised system featuring a groundbreaking drive concept that opens up new possibilities for inspection, maintenance and automation tasks.

Magnetic chain drive – Revolutionary flexibility for demanding tasks

How the magnetic chain drive works

The magnetic chain drive is based on powerful permanent magnets that enable a secure hold on ferromagnetic surfaces – even on walls or ceilings. Unlike conventional systems, no rails, guides or fixed installations are required.

Movement is either manual or motorised. In the automated version, the system can be operated by remote control or – similar to a robotic lawnmower – programmed to cover defined areas autonomously. The consistently stable magnetic force ensures reliable and smooth operation. The prototype weighs 26kg and can (so far) support loads of up to 50kg.

Key advantages of the system

The magnetic chain drive offers key advantages:

  • High flexibility: Can be used independently of existing guide or rail systems
  • Reliable adhesion: permanent magnets with a magnetic force that remains constant over the long term
  • Simple commissioning: No complex assembly or structural preparation required
  • Modular design: Adaptable to different tasks, loads and environments
  • Suitability for automation: Suitable for manual, remote-controlled or autonomous applications

Dieser Prototyp befindet sich in der Testphase und demonstriert das Potenzial für automatisierte Anwendungen.

Typical areas of application include:

  • Shipbuilding: inspection of ship hulls, maintenance of steel structures
  • Wind turbines: Condition monitoring of towers and nacelles
  • Logistics & warehouse technology: Inspection and maintenance tasks in high-bay warehouses
  • Construction & infrastructure: Inspection of bridges, tunnels, steel structures and façades
  • Tanks & containers:
    • Inspection of internal and external tank surfaces
    • Inspection of welds and areas of corrosion
    • Maintenance work on large containers in the chemical, oil and food industries

The magnetic chain drive offers significant advantages, particularly for tanks, as it allows hard-to-reach areas to be accessed without the need for scaffolding or complex safety systems.

Stage of development

A patent application has already been filed for the magnetic chain drive, which is currently at an advanced stage of development. The aim is to continuously optimise the system and scale it for different applications. Our experienced team will be happy to assist you in selecting the optimal configuration and integrating a magnetic chain drive for your specific application or into your existing infrastructure.

Two prototypes are currently being tested:

  • Manually operated prototype: Used to evaluate holding force, manoeuvrability and ease of use on vertical and overhead surfaces.

  • Self-propelled prototype: This is currently in the testing phase for automated applications and can be fitted with camera, sensor or control technology to navigate defined areas autonomously.
